Dallas O'Dallas

We meet again. I-35 from north of Hillsboro to pretty much Red Oak - you suck. You're filled with pothole after pothole and you just suck. There, I said it. It's a good thing my child can sleep through all your bumps and bruises!

But... the past week has been good. We've gotten the chance to ever so briefly see our friends Ben and Claire. We made it out to crepes yesterday with a bunch of the law kids and we're settling back into a routine in Austin. Oh - but how cool is this. While we were finishing up brunch, Greg looks over across the tables and says, "Is that Brandon?". Why, yes, yes it is. My college bud Brandon was grabbing a quick bite on his way to the Drafthouse. So cool. We really need to get together when we have more time -- I still haven't met his little man, Elijah!

Alas, now Atti and I are back in Dallas for the week. I've got some work to do, and Atticus is getting to spend some quality time with the grandparents.

Good Work Peanut

I mentioned last night to Greg that I'd seen a creepy crawly bug earlier in the morning and to be on the lookout.

He turned to Peanut and told her to catch the bug. A few minutes later, she jumped off the sofa and waited patiently by the tv. Then she took off towards the hall. Greg grabbed a tissue, and sure enough Peanut had caught the bug and flipped it over so Greg could catch it!

Good work kitty cat!!

Crafty Moms

My college roommate has started a new blog for crafty moms... Check it out HERE! Hopefully this will turn into a great resource for all the crafty women in my life.

Please share the link if you know someone who may be interested!

Go April! I hardly have time to keep up with my personal blog and here you are being all crafty!! :-)

Go, Go, Go

This is Atti's new motto. Now that he's figured out that he can walk... we can't stop him. It's literally go, go, go from the moment he wakes up until his tired little keppe hits the crib at night. On the plus side - I think all this go, go, go is making him tired which has helped with the sleeping issues.

I think perhaps he's growing as well. The little man has been chowing down on everything for the past few days. Last night, on the drive back to Austin, we stopped at IHOP for dinner. We figured it was better than fast food for the adults, and it gave us a few options for Atticus. Well... little man ate an entire pancake and a couple of scrambled eggs this after nursing AND snacking while waiting for the food. Today, just at lunch, he chowed through half a pint of raspberries (this kid is going to turn into a raspberry), some cantaloupe, a few cherries, some grapes, some baguette, a few handfuls of cereal, and a Gerber toddler sized Mac-n-Cheese! All this - not to mention the snacks that Andrea gave him!

Tonight after work we took a walk outside. Atticus is still in the Robeez shoes - so he can work on his balance, but he's doing fantastic. The lumpy bumpy sidewalk gave him a bit of trouble, but I think all in all it was a good evening outside. No skinned knees, no bruised anythings (that I'm aware of). We were only outside about 10 minutes but Atti's cheeks were already getting flushed, so we headed back indoors. I'm ready for this crazy 100+ degree weather to break!

Not much else. I've got to go, go, go myself.... I need to water the flowers outside before heading to bed!

New York Wrap Up

Ok... so this post is way overdue and who knows if I'll even remember all of the things we did in our last week!

Have I mentioned our last two brunches? Not sure. We met two of the other summers (Lee and Peter) for brunch in Tribeca at a great place called Bubby's. I had strawberry-rhubarb french toast made with with cinnamon raisin challah. Oh yeah... yummy.

The next day, the Badens met up with our friend Michael Addison from UT who was also interning in NYC this summer. We headed to the Upper West Side to Sarabeth's. Another fabulous restaurant. (I had almond crusted french toast -- what can I say, I was feeling rather carb happy). In a somewhat related note - I was thrilled to discover that the local HEB carries Sarabeth jam and preserves! Score!

Atticus and Greg went to the Met.

The three of us visited Top of the Rock. Awesome views. Way closer than the Empire State Building.

My last day in the city, I was able to meet up with another old friend for lunch, John Craig. I hadn't seen him since 2000 I think. Crazy! It was great seeing him and getting to catch up on the past 10 years, even if we had to squeeze it into an hour's lunch before I jetted off to the airport.

I'm sure there are other highlights I'm leaving out... but that's a pretty good start for now.

Philly Zoo Photos

I've uploaded some pictures that our friend Rob took at the Philly Zoo of Atticus attempting to eat an ice cream cone. Too cute!

Here's my favorite:

Belated 1 Year Stats

Last Friday was Atti's one year checkup. Good timing too, since the little man had developed a slight cold, a bit of a rash and was feeling a bit grumpy leading up to the appointment. I felt like such a bad Mom! Poor guy had an ear infection and a pretty bad case of eczema in addition to the cold and the teething.

He was given some steroid cream for the rash - which is doing wonders and a prescription for the ear infection. I thought he would like the ear meds - it smells sticky sweet, but Atticus is NOT a fan. Since it's a 10 day script, we've still got several days of trying to get it down. Ugh.

The rest of the appointment went relatively well. (Except for the part where Atti went tinkle tinkle little star all over Greg and Dr. Owens.)

Weight: 24 lbs 8 oz (I would swear he's heavier) 75% Percentile
Height: 31 inches 90% Percentile
FOC: (head circumference): 46.1 50% Percentile

He's right on target for most of the developmental milestones. He's drinking from a sippy cup - and from a straw. He can bang two blocks together, pick up small objects with his fingers, wave bye-bye and throw a ball. He's walking more and more everyday too. We're definitely entering the stage of separation anxiety though... we're in an "all Mama all the time" stage right now and it's a bit exhausting. If I leave the room for even a moment (even if Greg's in the room) he starts to cry and/or follow me.

We go back for an ear follow up appointment in a week and a half and I'm going to ask about running the blood test to check his lead levels and definitely see if the doc has any ideas about the non-napping. That is really wearing on everyone. It's hard to work when you can hear your child in the other room just wailing... I'll let you know what we find out!

Poor guy was so stinking pooped today after screaming for almost 2 hours this afternoon that he completely skipped dinner and bath and just passed out. No joke. I'm now afraid he's going to wake up at the crack of dawn -- but he was sound asleep at 10 till 7. Guess I should have started with the nap training a little earlier...now I know.

To sleep or not to sleep

That is the question. The good news is that Atticus has slept through the night for two nights in a row. I'm talking down at 7:30 and not a peep out of him until 6:30 am. In his own crib! In his own room! This is a miracle, and I hope it continues.

The bad news, he's refusing to nap. He "normally" napped around 10 or 10:30. We can tell he's tired, so either me, Greg, or Andrea (depending on the day) would take him to his room when we noticed the first yawn or eye rub. We sit in the rocker, read a story, see the droopy eyes and then move Atti to the crib. (Same routine from the evenings....) Except - the eyes fly open and he then stands and screams for an hour.

Ok, maybe we try for a one nap strategy. A long one from 1-3??? I would be OK with that too. So, after an hour of screaming, we retrieve Atticus. We play, eat lunch, and try again. Same results. An hour of screaming and we cave.

So just now, because I know how flipping tired he is, we walk around the block and he's asleep before we even reach the corner! So... We're sitting on the front porch & I'm deciding how long to sit here before we start melting. I guess since I can see beads of sweat on the little man's nose, it's time to go inside.

Sigh...

A what?

Dude.. Just got back from a short walk around the block. Sat on the porch, and a raccoon came out from under the truck! Click to make the photo bigger!!
