I will invite people to a real informal thing like a big playdate at my house or something at a neighborhood park or pool. I might send out the invitation to more than 20 people and 5 or so might come. But of the 20 people I invite to the informal event, if some of them email me back to let me know that they won't be able to make it, then next time when I have a much more intimate event like a dinner party, I will invite those who either came to my informal event OR emailed to let me know they wouldn't be able to attend. As for those who did not attend or respond, I may never invite them to anything again. My informal event invitation is like a test and those who pass get to move on to the next stage in our friendship.
Autumn... you may be onto something. Alas, this is for Atticus's birthday party this weekend - so it's a bit of a cross between informal (it is at the local park) and formal (I still need to know how many cupcakes to bake and how many juice boxes to bring). I've had a tough time making friends here in Ohio -- a couple good ones and the rest fall into the questionable category. I'm hoping to have better luck in New Orleans.
