Email Me

Do you have something to say to Atti? Something exciting happen that you want to share with the little man? Or, perhaps you just want to chat and let him know you're thinking of him...

Atti can now be reached at atticusbaden@gmail.com

Crazy, I know! But - I thought it was a cool idea. Anyone can just jot off a note to Atti and I can add it to his first year baby book. :-)

So, get those fingers warmed up and send Atti a note when you think about it. He'll love to look back on your thoughts from his first year (well, hopefully he'll have this email for more than a year...)when he's older. (Actually, he may not think it's all that cool when he's a teenager, but I promise, he will think it's cool later on!)

Little Man

I'm going to attempt to type one-handed since the little man insists on waking up every time I put him down! He normally takes a decent nap in the middle of the day, but lately, he only wants to nap if you're holding him. This could be a problem. I've got things to do!! Mainly laundry. Lots of laundry. Atticus went through 6 outfits in less than 2 days!! So, we're trying the next size up in diapers to see if that helps contain the poo-namis.

Earlier today we went over to see my cousin Nikki's new house here in Austin. It's only a couple miles up the road - which is great! The house is really nice - it's got a great open layout, big bedrooms and a HUGE bonus laundry/storage room. After the tour of the new diggs, we all went to lunch at Phil's Ice House. They have really yummy burgers and veggie burgers, are connected to Amy's Ice Cream (score) and have a huge playground for Zoe.

Little man was so good. He just sat all calm and awake in his car seat during the house tour, lunch and while Zoe played outside. Cool as a cucumber. Why is that? We're home and he screams. We get out in public or around other people and he's quiet as a mouse! He was fussing yesterday so I took him up to Hobby Lobby. I picked up some wooden letters to decorate his room. A week or so ago I found a cool retro red propeller with silver hooks on Craig's List. I think it's supposed to be a coat rack or something but I thought it would look cool over the crib with his name dangling from the hooks. My only question is how to decorate the wooden letters. Do I paint them or cover them with scrapbook paper in a modge podge paper-mache type crafty thing? I did pick up some paper that all coordinates with each other - just not sure it will go with the room. Hmmmm....

There are some new pics posted to Picasa. And I'll try to get some more. For now, I'm off and running since Atti is starting to scream. That's what I get for trying to put him down again! We're going to have to do something about the screaming when not being held....

Quick Updates

I'll need more time to tell you about the awesome weekend we had... but I wanted to share a quick Atti update with everyone.

Two Month Checkup - I took Atticus in to the doc yesterday for his well check. All is good.

Height - 24 inches, 75 - 90% (Greg and I unofficially measured him at 26" which I think is more accurate)
Weight - 13lbs and 6oz, 75 - 90%
Head Circumfrence 39 somethings - 25 - 50% (I guess the cheeky monkey cheeks make his head look bigger!!)

We're following Dr. Sears alternate vaccine schedule, so yesterday Atti got his Rotovirus and Dtap immunizations. He'll get a couple more in a month. Atti was a champ. He's definitely not a fan of the shots -- but he was a champ. Granted, he's still a bit fussy 24 hours later which I attribute to the shot, but overall it went well.

Big Weekend Plans

We are sooooo excited about this weekend. Nicole and Brad are flying into Austin tomorrow. Amy and girls are driving up from ravaged Houston. Dinner reservations have been made for Friday night at El Arroyo (the only place that would accept a reservation for 17 on a Friday night), Saturday morning we're going for crepes at my fav - Flip Happy Crepes, Saturday night remains up in the air -- but there will be plenty of game playing (Wii, Trivial Pursuit, Balderdash, etc) and Sunday morning is brunch at Moonshine. Is it me, or does our entire weekend revolve around food? :-) Sounds perfect!!

Off to bed so I'm well rested (ha) for tomorrow.

There will be tons of pictures taken this weekend - so be on the lookout next week for a September folder update on Picassa.

Where's the Beef?

You did what??? -- Greg
Ummm, I bought 28 steaks from a door to door salesman. -- Jen

In what can be described as a serious craving for red meat, I actually purchased $94 worth of steak from a door to door salesman. Crazy. Trust me, I know. He was really convincing. :-)

So, we cooked our first two steaks last night on the grill. Hallelujah, they really were great cuts and the meat was excellent. If it had ended up being bad cuts - I think Greg would have throttled me! Ha. Not really... but I would have gotten quite the earful for the large purchase. As is, he still keeps asking why I didn't start with a smaller purchase??? Good thing I didn't go with the 6 box package for $180!

So, if you're in the neighborhood - come on over, we'll throw some steak on the grill for ya! Or, for my veggie friends and family, we'll grill up some veggies too!!

Smiling and Other Assorted Updates

Are you smiling at me? Did you rub my lamp?

A little Alladin reference for those wondering what in the world I'm talking about! I think we're going to say that yesterday was the first official "smile". Not the sly little grin that Atticus does when sleeping or when you're not really looking... but me tickling his belly and saying his name, and a definite responsive smile. :-) Too bad I was so busy staring at the smile that I forgot to take a picture!! I'll try to get one this week.

Post Hurricane Ike and a small cool front - it was a b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l night here in Austin. Atti and I walked up to the corner grocery store to pick up some vegetables to cook with dinner and then, the Baden family went for a stroll after dinner. If the weather is this lovely all week, we'll be going on a walk every day! I do need to look into baby bug repellant just in case, but it seemed pretty good this evening.

Only bummer thing going on... I have caught a cold. Ugh. I hate colds. I especially dislike colds when I'm limited in my medicine choices because I'm nursing an infant. Cross your fingers that through the miracle of breast milk, Atticus does NOT catch this cold. That would be awful.

In other unrelated news - Atti made the AggieLand News. I need to figure out how to get a press release in the Longhorn News!! Daddy's on the ball...

And lastly - if you can, please consider making a donation to the American Red Cross to help with the Hurricane Ike cleanup efforts. Ike was a HUGE storm and the destruction and devastation is wide spread.

In Case You're Hungry

One of the lawyers that Greg worked for during the first part of the summer, Stephen Mason, welcomed a little girl on August 5th. To return the favor of a prepared meal, Atti and I delivered dinner to Stephen and his wife, Diane, on Friday night. The funny thing - I cooked for them when I haven't even been up to cooking for my own family! :-) But, I made a nice easy meal - and I made enough for us to deliver half and keep half!! (Good thinking Mamma!)

This recipe comes from one of Greg's classmates, Sandra - it's really good and really easy!

Italian Crockpot Chicken

1 to 1.5 lbs of boneless skinless chicken
1 pkg of dry Italian seasoning
1/2 C white wine (optional)
1 can condensed Cream of Mushroom soup
4 oz cream cheese with chives
4 Tbs butter

Brown chicken (I normally season with a garlic basil mix during the browning). Combine all ingredients in the crockpot and cook on low for 3-4 hours. Stir sauce and serve over pasta.

Cheeky Monkey

One of my favorite pictures that Pops took when they were in town for the Hadd family BBQ.

Get a Grip

According to BabyCenter - Atticus is right on track. He is definitely reaching out more and grabbing. Unfortunately, he likes to grab the skin on the back of my arm when trying to change his diaper, or my hair when I'm trying to burp him, or my face when he's screaming and flailing all around - but, he's grabbing and reaching out! He's following objects and does like to look dreamily into my eyes. (Ok, maybe it's a stretch, but I swear he does look at me all dreamy-like.)

Yesterday afternoon I also worked up the courage to try out the breast pump. I know - you really didn't need to know that, but it's really good news. Atticus took the bottle without any trouble. I'm hoping this means that at 430 am I can now nudge Greg and continue to sleep! Woo hoo - that is the best news I've had in a while! It also means that when I go back to work, my precious prince can continue to eat. I'm sure he likes that idea. :-)

Heart Healthy

Yesterday, I took Atti to the cardiologist to check out a heart murmur. Good news. The doc felt it's an innocent murmur - absolutely nothing to worry about. He says you don't technically "grow out" of murmurs... but that it may not always exist. Atti was a champ during the entire appointment (note to self - schedule all appointments around the 2pm nap time). He slept through an EKG, had his blood pressure checked (I didn't write this info down - but it was totally normal), his oxygen level checked (100%), and then he went for a full heart ultrasound. He slept through the entire thing! Figures - I swear he's still screaming when he's home, but he shows off for the doctors, I'm convinced. Oh... he was also weighed and measured. This kid is growing like a weed! He weighed in at 8lbs and 4oz and whopping 24 inches! Ummm, someone apparently forgot to tell him that he has plenty of time to grow - Momma needs some time to build up her arm muscles before he gets too gigantic! (I'm now really glad that Greg and I went with the "large" size for the infant carrier. The normal is rated to 22lbs and the large is up to 30lbs. Can you imagine a 30lb one year old - YIKES!!)

The other crazy thing - Greg and I are on the cutting edge of baby names. I know, who would have thought? The doc we saw yesterday came in all excited that our baby was an Atticus. Apparently, he just saw another infant last Friday that was also named Atticus. Nutty! Add that to the fact that two friends in California know folks with Atticus's and my coworker Kaylane has a friend that just used Atticus as a middle name... it's suddenly gaining in popularity it seems. We're such trendsetters.

Interviewing

While Jen has kept the updates coming with respect to my activities over the last few weeks of interviews here, there, and everywhere, I thought it might be good to provide my perspective on why this is all happening for those of you not initiated to this whole law school/law firm recruiting process.

The very short version is that while the interviews I’m going through now are for a summer clerkship position in the summer after my second year of law school (that would be this coming summer, May-August 2009, for those of you counting), the normal outcome (defined by 90%+ of the time) is that you will receive an offer of permanent employment at the end of that summer clerkship. That is, I’m in many ways interviewing now for what will be my first job out of law school. Thus the importance of the process, as its not really just about finding work for three months but finding the right platform or vehicle (using the trendy terms I’m heard uttered by more than a few law firm partners) upon which I will start my legal career.

As you can imagine, a number of things that factor into the decision such as the city, the types of work each firm does, types of clients generally served, the gut feel about the culture and people you meet to mention a few. The hours worked in large law firms are not trivial so its important to find a place that you want to be, doing work you want to do, with people you enjoy being around during those long days.

So far so good with respect to the options I’ve been fortunate enough to receive. Decision time will soon be upon us…

Normal

The clouds part. The bluebirds sing. The sun shines (well that's no big change...) Our "schedule" is somewhat returning!

The Prilosec seems to be working wonders. I have a happy baby. He's clean, he's fed and there has been no screaming for over 24 hours. Hallelujah. I'm charging the camera again so that I can get more pictures. I didn't comb Atti's hair after his bath today to see what it would do -- and there are some serious curls. He's so darn cute! I'll update the post once the batteries are charged!!

I've even had time to shower myself AND eat lunch. Today is a great day! Too bad Greg is in NYC and not here to enjoy happy baby.

Hotel Baden

Open for business. Our air mattress is well loved at the moment. Ironic that when we had a house with an actual guest room, we had so few visitors. Now that all I have to offer is a blow up bed in the middle of our living room - everyone wants to come visit. Maybe it's the addition of baby Atticus to the family? Ya think? :-)

Tonight, Skip, Nikki and Zoe are on their way over as I type. They're house hunting tomorrow and interviewing some midwives. I hope the are successful in both ventures!

I need to wake Mr. Rooty Tooty so that he sleeps again tonight. Pictures are posted to Picassa.

Enjoy.

Rooty Tooty

Atti may have another nickname in addition to "Screamin Demon". I've now added "Rooty Tooty" to his name plate. :-)

But... on the upside, he's not screaming!!

Lots of Firsts

Atti had a big weekend. He met his Aunt Rhonda for the first time - she's pretty cool he told me. He had his first outdoor adventure (this freaking Texas heat has put a damper on most of the outdoorsy stuff) when we met our law school friends for crepes. The crepes rocked - the heat and humidity was awful.... After brunch, I gave Atti a bath to get ready for the next part of the afternoon. Greg took Rhonda on a whirlwind tour of campus and downtown Austin. There were a ton of events going on in town this past weekend so Rhonda got to see Austin at it's finest - there was Bat Festival, the Human Race 10K and about a dozen other things going on!! One day (hopefully when it's say 80 degrees instead of 110), I'd like to run/walk in some of these events.

But I digress.. next up was the Hadd family BBQ. Funny thing, it was held at my Aunt's brother's house - who isn't a Hadd. :-) But, holy moly can that family make some fabulous homemade BBQ. If you'd seen the amount of meat I consumed...seriously, you'd have thought I was pregnant again (ha). Brisket, ribs, potato salad, deviled eggs - I am a southern girl through and through!! The day was fun but tiring. Atti did well hanging out with family and being all cute for everyone. Only issue of the day was the freaking heat - what are the chances that two weeks in a row at family gatherings the air compressor would go out and it would be as hot inside as out. Oy. Poor little man was toasty!!

Sunday morning, Greg and I wanted to take Rhonda to one of our favorite brunch spots, Kerbey Lane. (It was also Atti's first trip to Kerbey!) We thought we'd go all out and head to the original location. Unfortunately, it was not the best meal we've had there (seriously how dare they burn my gingerbread pancake!!) -- but since it was the ambiance we were after... I suppose it was still a good time. The rest of the day was pretty low key - just chilling at home, trying to keep the little guy happy. Not sure if it was too much stimulation or what -- but starting about Sunday, Atti has been returning to his "screamin demon" roots. No fun.

Monday - same o, same o. Hung out with the family - it was really great to just lounge around, chat and just do a lot of nothing!! (Except take pictures of the baby -- those will be posted shortly.) Greg and I dropped Rhonda off at the airport - glad to hear she made it home after having to go east to get west! I continued to try everything under the sun to calm Atti down while Greg headed to the coffee shop to get some school work done. The constant screaming was apparently distracting while he was trying to read and comprehend law school stuff. Go figure!

Tuesday, hmmmm... guess that was just yesterday... Greg headed off to school and a very tired mommy tried again to calm down the screaming demon. Poor guy. Apparently something was really bothering him. We tried bouncing, walking, swinging, changing, burping, slinging -- it was not a good morning. I finally caved and looked up colic on Google. Oh dear, everything I read led me to think that my dear precious little prince had suddenly developed this awful sounding ailment. I spoke to the nurse at the doc's office and she suggested they look him over just to be sure it wasn't an ear infection or some other physical ailment. Into the car seat we go -- and he's silent. Murphy's freaking law. We saw Dr. Hargrave this time -- he's another really great doc at the practice. I listed off symptoms and the few things that seem to calm Atti down. The diagnosis was that it could be either acid reflux or colic. Ugh. Poor guy - so either his tummy is burning causing him to spit up most of what he's eating and then scream... or it's colic and he's just screaming causing him to spit up. Neither sound like much fun. For either of us!! So, we've got a two week trial of baby Prilosec (who knew it even existed?) and some gripe water for the colic. We're going to try a little bit of everything. Mommy wants a happy baby! And a non-screaming baby makes everyone happy!!

It's now lunch time on Wednesday (happy anniversary to us) and so far so good. Atti did really well taking the Prilosec last night and this morning. So far, no spit up either - and only the smallest of fusses. I feel awful - how did it take me so long to realize that the poor guy had indigestion? I'm hoping the day continues in a forward direction with less screaming. It's so hard to look at your sweet little baby when they're turning colors from screaming and remain calm and focused and "together".

I'm off to take advantage of the nap and actually fix some lunch - woo hoo!! I'll post the pictures from the weekend up on Picassa in a few!
